Throughout his life,
Wendell continued to fish and hunt with the family spending weekends at
Imboden, where fishing and hunting were readily available. Much of his
younger years, he spent squirrel hunting on the 319 acre family farm, west
of Imboden. As a teenager he would hunt all day often eating 'possum'
grapes or persimmons for lunch. One day, when he was fifteen, he killed 19
squirrels, eleven over the limit. When his dad found out about this, he
became so angry that he threatened to sell the Imboden farm!
Wendell has also enjoyed
deer hunting. He shot his first deer when he was twelve years old. His
latest passion is turkey hunting or helping others with their turkey
hunting. He has vowed to practice on his turkey calling every day much to
the chagrin of Linda and his grandchildren.
In addition to hunting
and fishing, Wendell's hobbies are carving duck calls, collecting antiques
and other collectible items, and watching sports shows on television. He
is a retired farmer currently helping son, John L, with the farm.. He grew
watermelons, wheat, grain sorghum, soybeans, and cotton. In past years he
raised cattle. After fall harvest of the crops, he duck hunts in the St.
Francis river bottoms. Throughout the year, he fishes in both rivers and
lakes. His primary target is the largemouth bass. He won a regional bass
tournament in 1986. Unlike some fishermen, he generally has no need to lie
about his success- he is a very good fisherman. |
